Found throughout North America, including the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, black bears have a special relationship with trees. They roam the thick forests and understory vegetation looking for fruit and nut-bearing trees and shrubs to gorge on. They provide essential ecosystem services as seed dispersers and nutrient providers. They deposit nitrogen from salmon remnants into the soil which is taken up by the root systems of coniferous trees. Bears often communicate with each other by marking trees with their scent by rubbing on them, clawing them, or biting them. They may use the base of a tree for a den or climb a tree if they feel threatened. All of these bear-tree interactions contribute substantially to the size, health, and vigour of trees and the surrounding forest community at large.
